Uterine fibroids, also known as leiomyomas or myomas, are the most common type of benign uterine neoplasms in women of childbearing age. They are a major cause of morbidity in women of this age range, and occasionally also after menopause. Uterine fibroids are the monoclonal neoplasms of uterine smooth muscle cells, with the neoplasms consisting of sizable amounts of extracellular matrix, containing fibronectin, collagen, and proteoglycan. Although the pathogenesis of uterine fibroids is not clearly known, evidence suggests that progestogens and estrogens proliferate growth of the tumor, as the fibroids rarely develop before menarche and relapse after menopause.
