Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is an enveloped, non-segmented, single-stranded, negative-sense RNA virus belonging to the
Paramyxoviridae family. RSV is the leading cause of bronchiolitis in infants, and is estimated to be responsible for 22% of all episodes of
acute
lower respiratory tract infections in young children. Almost all children are infected with RSV within the first two years of life, and
approximately
0.5–2.0% of infections will result in hospitalization. RSV is also recognized as a major cause of morbidity in immunosuppressed adults and
the
elderly.
